Kiez in Bewegung / Berlin, funded by the Deutsche Fernsehlotterie / Stiftung Deutsches Hilfswerk, children from Gesundbrunnen Primary School in Berlin-Wedding have created their own version of a beloved German folktale. Invited to the 28th Neukölln Theatre Festival for Primary Schools, they will present “The Bremen Town Musicians” on the historic stage of Heimathafen Neukölln. Their interpretation of the story has many layers — serious and humorous, romantic and realistic, magical and contemporary. Against all odds, four brave animal heroes manage to find something better than what fate had originally in store for them. They succeed because, despite their differences, they come together, fight together, and stick together!
The children involved in the production come from many nations, and most of them did not grow up with the language of the Brothers Grimm. “The Bremen Town Musicians” helped them feel more at home in German and build trust in their own abilities. Most importantly, they learned that they can create something entirely new together — something that brings joy not only to themselves but also to their audience. Working on this theatre project offered the children insight into the exciting world of performance and dance. Supported by professional theatre and dance educators through weekly classes and holiday/weekend workshops, the students were involved in every step of the creative process — from choosing the story to shaping the texts, costumes, and dramaturgy. They played an active role in decision-making and became co-creators of their production.
About the project: Kiez in Bewegung / Berlin
The diverse socio-cultural formats of Initiative LUNA PARK e.V., including the development of fairy tale performances and children, promote cultural participation and provide creative spaces for personal growth in a socioeconomically challenged neighborhood. Kiez in Bewegung / Berlin contributes to greater educational equity by offering children and young people additional opportunities for skill development — right within their familiar school environment. Around Gesundbrunnen Primary School, where LUNA PARK is also based, public rehearsals, performances, and community events open up cultural access for families and neighbors alike. Performing not only in their school but also on professional stages like Heimathafen Neukölln strengthens the children’s sense of self-worth and their belief in their own creative agency.
