CROSSING THE FREEWAY: OUTSIDE is the newly designed and revised version for the public space of the dance performance “Crossing the Freeway”, which was originally developed for a closed stage and was performed in September 2019 at Studio 14 of Uferstudios in Berlin-Wedding. CROSSING THE FREEWAY: OUTSIDE deals with the crises of our time – economic, social, political, and ecological – with a focus on the refugee movements caused by these crises. Based on testimonies and memories of refugees and people with a migration background, the project reconstructs the contradictions between public space and the personally felt, experienced, and fragmented space. Through movement, soundscapes, and projection of images, the source material is transformed into a new context. In this interactive performance, the audience is repeatedly invited to cross the performing space and change their own perspective. Is freedom always only the freedom of others – those who have no obstacles in their way?
